Famous Hackers

Eric Corley(aka Emmanuel Goldstein)

Eric Gordon Corley(aka Emmanuel Goldstein) was born in 1959.

Corley's pseudonym, Emmanuel Goldstein, is taken from the George Orwell book Nineteen Eighty-Four.

Goldstein is the Editor in chief of the 2600 quarterly magazine which started publication in 1984. Along with 2600 Magazine, Goldstein also hosts two talkshow radio show's, "Off the Hook" and "Off the Wall".

Emmanuel graduated from State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1982 with an English Degree.

In 1999, Goldstein was named as a defendant in Universal versus Reimerdes, in an attempt to stop DeCSS (a computer program used for decrypting content on a DVD encrypted using the Content-Scrambling System (CSS).

2600.com had provided links to websites which contained the DeCSS code. He was the only defendant who chose to fight the industry in court. Goldstein lost the case.

In 2001, Goldstein produced a documentary called "Freedom Downtime", in which he and several fellow activists protested Kevin Mitnick's incarceration. A protest was organised outside of a Miramax office on the grounds that Kevin was mis-interpreted in the film "Takedown". Kevin had not even testified yet, and Miramax were already producing films proclaiming his guilt.

In 2004, Goldstein was arrested for videotaping a demonstration against the Republican National Convention. Although Goldstein was not involved in the protests, he was still detained for over 30 hours, and eventually charged with Disorderly Conduct.

Three months later, the city dropped the charges.

In 2006, Goldstein also guest starred a film called "Urchin", along with fellow hacker Mark Abene(aka Phiber Optik). Goldstein played the part of "The Outside Man"

Emmanuel also apparently freequently attends the New York 2600 meet up's.
