Mark Abene was born in New York in 1972. More commonly known by Phiber Optik, Phiber was once a member of of the NY crew Legion of Doom, but later went on to Masters of Deception. Phiber was a highly outspoken hacker in the early 90's, doing debates on tv, even interviews with NY Times. In 1994, Phiber served a one-year prison sentence for conspiracy and unauthorized access to computer and telephone systems. TIME Magazine's Joshua Quittner called him "the first underground hero of the Information Age, the Robin Hood of cyberspace." After Abene's release, he returned to his employment at ECHO, but later left to become system administrator of Radical Media, Inc., an emerging media company. After doing some consulting and public speaking on security, he was recruited by Steve Lutz at Ernst & Young, LLP as a staff consultant in Ernest & Young's tiger team practice. Mark later on went to join forces with former Legion of Doom member Dave Buchwald and Andrew Brown to create security consulting company Crossbar Security. Crossbar provided the same realism in tiger teams and security reviews that had initially elevated Ernest & Young's practice to such high demand. As a result of the "dot com" bust, Crossbar went defunct in 2001 due to cuts in corporate security spending. For more info on Phiber, read "Masters of Deception - The Gang that Ruled Cyberspace".
